🌞 Leader expectations
Be present, helpful, kind and approachable. Take initiative and remember that you are representing New College and U of T. The energy you bring can help a nervous or unsure NewC feel like they belong.
🧑🤝🧑 Head Leaders
Head Leaders are the main connection between PLs and VMs for feedback, assistance and monitoring throughout the week.
- Starting Day 2, each Head Leader collects attendance sheets during morning Group Time from their three assigned PL groups, including their own.
- Make it clear to NewCs that attendance is not mandatory; the sheets are for internal use.
- Watch event participation and enthusiasm levels, then connect with VMs at the end of the day.
🤝 Group Time
PLs choose activities based on their group’s energy. ELs and OIs without active tasks help PLs by engaging with groups and playing the games.
Join the activities and lead by example — it makes NewCs more comfortable participating.

📱 Communicating with NewCs
PLs, partner PLs and NewCs should agree on a platform for Orientation-related communication throughout the week. Keep language and topics appropriate, maintain boundaries, and use the group only for Orientation-related conversations.
NewCs are in unfamiliar environments and may feel nervous or overwhelmed. Keep an eye out for all NewCs, not only your own group, and check in when appropriate. If you are uncomfortable handling a situation, reach out to an OE or OC for support.
